The Cowboys elected Sean Lee, Jason Witten, Dan Bailey, Travis Frederick and Barry Church as team captains for this season.

Quarterback Tony Romo, who will miss at least the first six games with a compression fracture, was not among those elected as captains in a vote of the players.

“It’s a great honor, especially with all the leaders we have on this team,” Lee said Friday. “I have so many guys I’ve looked up to like Witten, a lot of guys. So to have that role, it’s something I embrace, something I love. But we have a ton of leaders on this team. I think we have great leaders throughout the entire team.”

Lee said the captains take their leadership role seriously

“When you’re voted a captain, you have to step up every single day; you have to lead by example every single day,” Lee said. “You have to take your game to another level, so it’s something that I’m proud of, but I know it’s something I have to work to live up to.”
