Why the Mavericks lost: Dirk Nowitzki reached another milestone in his remarkable career Sunday. But the Denver Nuggets found a way to eke out an improbable 116-114 overtime victory against Dallas at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

After he was fouled by Raymond Felton, D.J. Augustin hit two free throws with just 0.9 seconds remaining for the game-winning points. In the disappointing loss, Nowitzki scored 30 points and reached 1,000 points in a season for the 16th time in his 18-year career.

The Mavs kept making mistake after mistake down the stretch until it wound up costing them an important game.

Key players: Kenneth Faried led the Nuggets with 25 points and 20 rebounds, Will Barton scored 20, Gary Harris and Emmanuel Mudiay each had 16 points.

Key stat: The Nuggets outrebounded the Mavs 58-46.

Records: Mavs 33-30, Nuggets 25-38
