DALLAS -- Point guard JJ Barea cleared waivers Wednesday and has agreed in principle to sign a one-year, $1.31 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks.
The Mavs plan to waive point guard Gal Mekel to make room for Barea, who was a fan favorite that helped Dallas win the 2011 NBA title.
Barea reached a buyout and was waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. Then, both he and the Mavs had to sweat out the past 48 hours, particularly since they both wanted to be reunited.
A case can be made that the 2011 NBA Finals against Miami changed for the Mavs when Barea was inserted into the starting lineup for Game 4 of that series. At the time, the Mavs trailed the Heat, 2-1.
But after Barea moved into the lineup, the Mavs didn’t lose another game.
Barea joins a crowded group of Mavs point guards which include Jameer Nelson and Devin Harris, and the injured Raymond Felton.
