DALLAS – The Dallas Mavericks trimmed their roster to 15 Saturday by requesting waivers on three players.
Gone are center Bernard James, guard Doron Lamb and forward Ivan Johnson. The Mavs now have the NBA maximum of players heading into Tuesday’s regular season opener in San Antonio against the world champion Spurs.
Waiving Johnson and Lamb was certainly no surprise since both players were issued non-guaranteed contracts and were extreme long shots to make the Mavs’ final roster. But the jettison of James comes as a surprise, since most of the $915,243 he was scheduled to make this season is guaranteed.
However, in the end the Mavs decided to keep forward Charlie Villanueva over James. Villanueva, who has a non-guaranteed contract worth $1.316,809, was impressive throughout the majority of training camp and could give the Mavs some stretch-4 minutes behind Dirk Nowitzki.
