DALLAS – Bad news hit the Dallas Mavericks on Monday when it announced that superstar forward Dirk Nowitzki will not play in Tuesday’s preseason opener against the Houston Rockets.
Nowitzki suffered a right hip contusion early in the second half of Saturday’s Blue-White scrimmage at American Airlines Center. Now entering the 17th season, the 36-year old Nowitzki sat out Monday’s practice and is listed as day-to-day.
"Dirk has a right hip contusion and he missed practice today and he will not play tomorrow, and then we’ll update you as we can from there,’’ coach Rick Carlisle said. "It’s not considered serious, but we’re going to give it a day or two and see what’s what.’’
Nowitzki’s absence could mean more playing time for Charlite Villanueva, who the Mavs have been raving about in training camp. Villanueva has a non-guaranteed contract with the Mavs, but Carlisle has already said that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t be on the team’s 15-man roster.
