About the Mavericks: The Mavs are hopeful that forward Dirk Nowitzki can play. Nowitzki missed Friday’s home opener against the Rockets with a stomach illness. ... The big positive for the Mavs thus far is the spirited play of Harrison Barnes. Barnes is averaging 25 points and seven rebounds a game, and is shooting 56.8 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range. ... The Mavs must find ways to get Wesley Matthews better looks at the basket. Matthews is averaging 13 points a game, but is only shooting 23.3 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from 3-point range.
About the Rockets: This is the home opener for the Rockets, who lost their season opener Wednesday in Los Angeles against the Lakers, 120-114. ... The Rockets collected their first win of the season when they defeated the Mavs 106-98 on Friday night in Dallas. Trevor Ariza (27 points) and James Harden (26 points, seven rebounds, eight assists) led the Rockets. ... Harden is averaging 30 points, 7.5 rebounds and 12.5 assists, Eric Gordon averages 18.5 points, and Ariza is averaging 16 points while shooting 54.5 percent on 3-pointers.
