DALLAS – Multiple sources have confirmed that the Dallas Mavericks will play a regular season game in January at the Mexico City Arena in Mexico City.
As part of the NBA’s involvement with playing games internationally, the Mavs will be joined in Mexico City by the San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns.
The NBA will release its schedule in mid-August. But the Mavs reportedly will play the Suns on Jan. 14.
In 1992, the Mavs played a preseason game in Mexico City against the Houston Rockets. It was the first NBA game ever played in Latin America.
The Mavs and Rockets also played a regular game in Mexico City on Dec. 7, 1997, which was the first regular season NBA game played in Latin America. Houston won that contest, 108-106.
On Dec. 4, 2013, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Spurs were slated to play a regular season game at the Mexico City Arena. But the game was postponed because of an electrical issue that caused the arena to be filled with smoke, and that game was eventually played on Apr. 8, 2014 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
