The Joplin Demize took advantage of a slow start by the Fort Worth Vaqueros to win 2-1 Saturday night in Joplin, Mo.
Joplin (2-0, six points) opened the scoring when Thalles Silva broke loose on a one-on-one and scored in the second minute.
Joplin added to its lead in the 29th minute on a deflected shot.
The Vaqueros (0-1-2, two points) — whose 375-mile trip to southwest Missouri is their longest of the season — got on the board when Corwin Carbonell found defender Austin Stewart’s cross for his second goal of the year.
The match was delayed 15 minutes before kickoff because of standing water and again in the 34th minute because of lightning. When play resumed, the soggy field slowed down the match.
The Vaqueros’ next game is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Texas Wesleyan against San Antonio.
