Pitching dominated the evening as the Rangers opened a three-game series with the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Cole Hamels outpitched Michael Wacha thanks to a fifth inning solo home run by Rougned Odor as the Rangers escaped with a 1-0 win.
Pitching: Hamels held the Cardinals scoreless on two hits over 7 2/3 innings to improve to 7-1. Hamels held St. Louis to three hits and three walks and left after Matt Carpenters single through the left side with two outs in the eighth. Matt Bush got Aledmys Diaz to pop out to preserve the 1-0 lead. Sam Dyson pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 12th save.
Hitting: Rougned Odor’s solo homer on the first pitch of the fifth inning gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead against Wacha. In the eighth, Wache was replaced by Seung Hwan Oh with runners on the corners to get Beltre to pop out to end the top of the inning. Adrian Beltre had two of the Rangers’ three hits in the first five innings.
Notable: Odor’s third homer on the road trip and team-leading 13th was estimated at 433 feet ... It’s the 14th time the Rangers have won 1-0 on a solo homer, the last coming Aug. 28, 2012 against the Rays on Ian Kinsler’s homer ... last time they did it on the road was July 20, 2008 at the Twins on a Taylor Teargarden homer ... last time the Rangers won 1-0 Sept. 7, 2014 against the Mariners ...
