National Baseball Hall of Fame adds two Texas Rangers — technically
The National Baseball Hall of Fame has two new members, both of whom spent time — a short time — with the Texas Rangers.
Outfielders Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones played less than 162 games combined with the Rangers.
Beltrán was a midseason acquisition in 2016 from the New York Yankees. He batted .280 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs in 52 games with the Rangers, who earned the No. 1 seed in the American League but were swept in the Division Series by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The next season, Beltrán left for the Houston Astros and won the World Series in what turned out to be his 20th and last year in the majors.
For his career, Beltrán hit .279 with 435 home runs and was a nine-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner.
Jones signed a one-year minor league contract with the Rangers in 2009 but earned a roster spot. He batted .214 with 17 home runs and 43 RBIs in 82 games.
For his career, Jones hit .254 with 434 home runs in 17 seasons. He was a five-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner.
Jones will be remembered most for the first 12 seasons of his career with the Atlanta Braves, while Beltrán is most known for the seven seasons in the middle of his career that he spent with the New York Mets.
The pair were elected to the Hall of Fame this year alongside second baseman Jeff Kent, who was elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee.
Former Texas Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez earned 40% of the vote in his fifth year on the ballot. He has obvious Hall of Fame credentials but is tainted by his admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs.
Former Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels earned 23.8% of the vote on his first year on the ballot, and former Rangers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo earned 0.7% in his first year.
Players need 75% for election.
