Cole Hamels tries to be at his best late in the season
The final three-city, 10-game road trip of the 2016 season for the Texas Rangers begins Monday with an afternoon Labor Day affair at Safeco Field, and it features a pair of aces coming off dismal performances.
The last time Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels faced the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, he walked in two runs and allowed six runs in only 4 1/3 innings. The Rangers bailed him out with two late-inning rallies, including a two-run walk-off homer by Rougned Odor.
Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez lasted only four innings Wednesday as the Rangers tagged him for six runs. Four of them came on a Carlos Gomez grand slam in the fourth.
The Rangers swept three games from the Mariners, effectively ending Seattle’s hopes in the American League West, and have an 11-4 head-to-head edge this season. That includes a 4-2 record at pitcher-friendly Safeco Field.
After four games against the Mariners, the Rangers travel to Anaheim face the Angels for three games and then are on to Houston for three more games.
