The Aledo volleyball and basketball teams hope to get out of the UIL districts they were assigned on Thursday.

Athletic director Tim Buchanan sent an appeal to the UIL on Friday, a day after the UIL reset volleyball, basketball and football districts for the next two school years.

Bearcats’ volleyball and basketball teams were moved to District 4-5A with Granbury, Abilene Wylie, Abilene Cooper, Wichita Falls and Wichita Falls Rider.

It’s a 270-mile commute from Aledo to Abilene, and a 232-mile round trip from Aledo to Wichita Falls.

“The travel in 4-5A basketball and volleyball would result in an extremely large amount of missed school time,” Buchanan said. “Therefore we have filed the wavier.”

All appeals are due to the UIL by Feb. 11, and hearings are then scheduled.

Buchanan said he prefers District 5-5A which includes Arlington Seguin, Burleson, Burleson Centennial, Crowley, Everman, Mansfield Legacy and Mansfield Timberview.

“Travel is less and they’re a seven-team district so them picking up an eighth school would help them with scheduling,” Buchanan said. “No byes in the middle of their season with eight teams.”

Aledo football is in District 5-5A Division II, Arlington Seguin, Burleson, Burleson Centennial, Cleburne, Everman, Joshua, Midlothian and Waco University.
