So how did Southlake Carroll handle UIL realignment without a football coach?

Carroll school district officials focused on scheduling football games had little to say Thursday at Birdville Fine Arts/Athletic Complex about the investigation of the Dragons program and head coach Hal Wasson.

Wasson was placed on paid adminstrative leave on Jan. 24. Carroll ISD has trustees have a board meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Carroll ISD superintendent Davis Faltys said in the January email to Dragon Football Families that the district had determined there was a need to conduct an internal review of the program and that the report would be shared with the UIL.

Without a football coach, Carroll Senior High principal Shawn Duhon and district athletic director Darren Allman represented the Dragons at Thursday’s UIL realignment activities.

“Of course I can’t talk about it,” Allman said. “This is really not the time, plus I can’t talk about it. All our communication is going through Julie Thannum and the district.”

Thannum is Assistant Superintendent for Board and Community Relations for Carroll ISD.

“She’s out and front with all of that,” Allman added. “We want to be good communicators and let people know what’s going on, but we have to protect everyone as well.

“As information comes, Julie will make sure to get that out to you and everyone else.”

Allman went on to say there is no timetable for a decision.

Duhon declined to comment.

The review is focusing on procedures as they relate to UIL rules and ensuring employees’ understanding and compliance with district policies, practices and guidelines. The review is being conducted by Allman, assistant superintendents and the human resources department.

The UIL placed Carroll in a district without Euless Trinity for the first time in four years Thursday. They are in District 5-6A with Denton Guyer, Haslet Eaton, Trophy Club Nelson and Keller schools Fossil Ridge, Timber Creek, Central and Keller High.

The last time the Dragons shared a district with Keller ISD was 2013.

Carroll will play South Grand Prairie, Colleyville Heritage and Odessa Permian to begin the 2018 season.

Wasson, 61, has been the head coach at Carroll since 2007. He was an assistant there from 2001-02 before taking over at Keller Fossil Ridge.

In 2017, Wasson directed the Dragons to a 10-4 record and appearance in the 6A Division II state quarterfinals before falling to Waco Midway, 42-28. Wasson is 121-25 (.829 winning percentage) at Carroll.
