Keller Timber Creek foils Irving Nimitz’s second half plan to win season opener

Keller Timber Creek went to the running game in the second half — led by quarterback Dylan McCrary and running back Blake Irving’s 251 combined yards to defeat Irving Nimitz 36-21 on Saturday at Keller ISD Complex.

Key players: Blake Irving rushed 19 times for 157 yards and two second-half touchdowns (4 yards and 9 yards). McCrary added 94 yards rushing on 17 carries and scored from 13 yards to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter. Erik Ezukanma and Nick Nelson caught touchdown passes (18, 17). The Vikings were led by Christian Nelms, who scored on a 48-yard touchdown run to end the first half. Garrett Winters caught a 57-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.

Key stat: The Falcons ran 11 plays (10 rushes) for 77 yards and ran off over six minutes during the opening drive of the third quarter to take a 22-21 lead. They rushed for 189 yards after halftime.
