Playoff-bound Mansfield Legacy looked poised to take care of business against Red Oak, taking a 28-6 lead late in the second quarter, but the Hawks scored once in the final minute of the half and again at the end of a long third quarter drive to cut it to 28-20 with 4:43 remaining in the third. However, the Broncos added a field goal late in the third and a touchdown in the fourth while keeping the Hawks scoreless the rest of the way for a 38-20 victory at R.L. Anderson Stadium in Mansfield.
Key players: Legacy RB Kameron Sessions rushed 14 times for 159 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown run. Broncos QB Kendall Catalon rushed for 111 yards on three carries, highlighted by a 45-yard sprint to the end zone and a 60-yard run. He also threw for two TDs. Red Oak junior QB Carson Forbes, who replaced injured starter Chris Bugg in the second quarter, threw for 105 yards and a TD, while Hawks RBs Blake Sonnier and Dee Johnson had 76 and 79 yards rushing, respectively.
Key stat: Both teams were effective offensively (Legacy 389 yards, Red Oak 333 yards), but the Hawks squandered a chance to keep the ballgame close early in the fourth when they trailed 31-20 and drove to the Broncos 17-yard line before fumbling.
