Turnovers doom Keller Fossil Ridge as Keller Central prevails

Keller Fossil Ridge has had Keller Central’s number — winning the past two meetings and four of the last five.

But six turnovers hurt Fossil Ridge in its attempt for a third straight victory as Central won a District 3-6A clash 49-28 on Thursday night at Keller ISD Athletic Complex.

Central quarterback Reese Robertson didn’t help Fossil Ridge either, accounting for 300 total yards and five touchdowns. He rushed for 114 yards and scored four times.

After the Panthers (5-3, 2-2 3-6A) tied it at 28-28 just two plays into the third quarter on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Max Akin to Anthony Smith, it was all Chargers.

The Panthers recovered the ensuing onside kick, but Central’s William Vuong had one of five interceptions by the Chargers, and Central (4-4, 3-1) went on to score 21 consecutive points to snap Fossil Ridge’s two-game winning streak in the series.

Robertson scored on a 28-yard run to give Central a 35-28 lead with 6:01 in the third, and running back Zion Purvis added a 19-yard touchdown run in the fourth. Purvis finished with 112 yards and two TDs.

Central took the opening drive 89 yards with Robertson scoring on a 29-yard run for the 7-0 lead with 9:41 in the first quarter. After the teams traded fumbles, Fossil Ridge tied it, on Smith’s 56-yard run with 8:15 in the quarter, but Central regained lead when Robertson hit Matt Simmons for a 59-yard score.

The Panthers answered when Smith scored from 4 yards out to tie it 14-14 with 4:06 in the first. Fossil Ridge took its first lead 21-14 in the second quarter on a 50-yard run by Smith, who had 181 yards and three touchdowns.

Central also had interceptions by Tony Dracopoulos (twice), Noah Moreno and Nick Schifftner.
