Waxahachie Life and Fort Worth Benbrook kicked off District 4-4A Division II play Thursday with both teams eying their first win of the season.
Benbrook nearly erased a 22-point halftime deficit, but the Bobcats came up short as Life won 43-34 at Clark Stadium.
Life (1-5, 1-0 4-4A DII) scored 29 points in the first half, which exceeded the 28 it had scored in its first five games combined, and led 29-7 at the break.
The Bobcats (0-6, 0-1) scored on the first drive of the second half when Devin Rowe hit Ron Brown for a 29-yard touchdown on fourth-and-20 to cut the lead to 29-14.
Benbrook recovered the ensuing onside kick, but couldn’t convert on fourth down. One play later, Life quarterback Matt Hipshire scored on a 59-yard run for a 36-14 lead with 5:18 left in the third.
Bobcats running back Quintan Jackson, who rushed for a career-high 323 yards, scored on a 42-yard run to make it 36-21 with 10:59 to play.
After Life scored again with four minutes to go, Benbrook added touchdowns on a 12-yard run by Brown and a 4-yard run by Jackson with 33.3 left.
Jackson finished with three touchdowns, including a 56-yarder with 9:52 in the second. Brown had 77 total yards and two touchdowns.
The Mustangs rushed for 357 yards, 145 yards by Hipshire, who scored two touchdowns. He added 62 yards passing with touchdowns to Gage Mayfield and Josh Sanders.
