A Burleson High School football player remained hospitalized Saturday night with a serious head injury, about 24 hours after falling out of the back of a motionless pickup in what Elks coach Gary McElroy called a freak accident.

Jonathan Lopez, a junior defensive tackle, is in intensive care at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. He suffered bleeding in the brain that has “finally stopped,” McElroy said in a text message, but doctors are still waiting for the swelling to go down.

Lopez, who is not in a coma, has “many players with him at the hospital,” McElroy said.

“There was absolutely NO drinking involved,” McElroy said by text. “Like I said crazy freak accident.”

He said the accident was not related to Friday night’s District 9-5A game in which Burleson defeated Joshua 45-3.
