Boys basketball preview: Players to watch

With a week in the books for the high school boys basketball season, a lot of players are on the radar around Dallas-Fort Worth.

Looking around the area, here are a few names to remember this season.

North Crowley began the season No. 5 in the state in 6A. Others that were ranked to begin the season: Keller 23rd in 6A. Class 5A champ Lancaster is No. 1 with Crowley at No. 7. Saginaw Chisholm Trail enters at No. 21. Brock rounds out the polls at No. 4 in Class 3A.

Players to Watch

Jonathan Jackson, Everman, Sr.: 8-5A Co-MVP, TABC all-state, went for 20.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 4.6 apg and 3.0 bpg.

RJ Nembhard, Keller, Sr.: 5-6A MVP, TABC all-region, averaged 21 ppg, 4.9 rpg and 2.8 apg. Signed with TCU.

CJ Roberts, Richland, Sr.: First-team 7-6A, went for 22.5 ppg and shot 52 percent from the field. Signed with Missouri.

Jhivvan Jackson, Trinity, Sr.: Signed with UT-San Antonio. Last year’s 7-6A Offensive MVP scored 22 points per game.

Kobe Hill, Dunbar, Sr.: First-team all-district selection led the area with 6.1 assists per game, also averaged 9.9 points.

Jordon Myers, North Crowley, Sr.: Has been named 4-6A MVP the last two seasons.

Mike Adewunmi, Lake Ridge, Sr.: First team all district is signed with Houston.

Tim Johnson, Timberview, Sr.: First team 14-5A last season. Had 14 points, six steals last week vs. Everman.

Garrett Shaw, Mansfield, Sr.: 6-foot-3 guard had a good summer.

Tre Thomas, North Crowley, Sr.: Was named 4-6A Newcomer of the Year.

Jerred Fields, Dunbar, Sr.: Expected to be the go-to man this season; helped the Wildcats to the state tourney last season. 23 points, 5 rebounds in season opener.

Kevin Ellis, North Crowley, Sr.: One of the top sixth-man in the area. Has school career record for charges taken.

Jalen Petillo, Martin, Sr.: 6-foot-7 power forward scored 16 points last week vs. Plano West.

Bryson Power, Chisholm Trail, Sr.: 5-5A Defensive Player of the Year, should play key role on state-ranked Rangers.

Pedro Castro, Brewer, Sr.: Signed with UT-Arlington. First team all district.

Jalen Adams, Birdville, Sr.: 6-5A Newcomer of the Year. Scored 26 points in season opener vs. Saginaw.

Jordan Mitchell, Polytechnic, Sr.: Offensive MVP for 6-5A last year.

Jaylon McLean, Trimble Tech, Sr.: 7-5A Offensive MVP.

Jeff Postell, Arlington Heights, Sr.: 7-5A first team pick.

Chris Mullins, Timberview, Jr.: First team 14-5A, had game-high 23 points last week vs. Everman.

Kyler Edwards, Bowie, Jr.: Sophomore/Freshman MVP last year in 4-6A.

Jack McBride, Carroll, Jr.: 6-foot-4 forward was last season’s 7-6A Newcomer of the Year.

Addison Wallace, Cleburne, Jr.: 8-5A Sophomore MVP last season. Had 18 points, 10 boards, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals in season opener.

Grant Sherfield, North Crowley, Soph.: Transferred from Mansfield Summit. Had 20.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.8 apg. Made 84 3-pointers, shot 38 percent from three, 14-5A Freshman MVP.

Avery Anderson, Northwest, Soph.: 13.7 points per game and shot 50 percent last season, helped the Texans to deepest playoff run since 1994 and was a first team all district pick.
