Texas Tech football coach Kliff Kingsbury and Red Raiders quarterback Pat Mahomes are on the cover of the 2016 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, the publication announced Wednesday.
The 400-page 57th annual edition of “the bible of Texas football,” hits newsstands and store shelves beginning June 24.
It’s been a long time since there were this many compelling characters in the Lone Star State.
The 2016 cover is a tribute to the iconic 1963 cover that featured Texas Longhorns coach Darrell Royal and defensive lineman Scott Appleton.
The 2016 magazine also has a secondary “gatefold” cover, featuring the high school equivalent of the dynamic coach-quarterback duo — Austin Westlake coach Todd Dodge and quarterback Sam Ehlinger.
Dodge led Southlake Carroll to four Class 5A (now 6A) state titles between 2002 and 2006, and got the Chaparrals to a 6A title game in 2015.
The 400-page Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine previews more than 1,400 Texas high school football teams.
“It’s been a long time since there were this many compelling characters in the Lone Star State,” DCTF managing editor Greg Tepper said. “From all corners of the state, there are tremendous stories to tell. But for us, the idea of Kliff Kingsbury — the preeminent quarterback guru in the state — finally having his hand-picked signal-caller is too exciting to pass up.
“And to celebrate Texas high school football as well with Todd Dodge and Sam Ehlinger on the secondary cover — all while recreating one of our most iconic images — it’s something about which we are truly excited and proud.”
The magazine has previews on more than 1,400 high school football teams. The Class 3A preview feature is on Brock senior linebacker Zane Young.
