Martin, Grapevine and Kennedale girls in UIL soccer regional finals

Class 6A Arlington Martin, 5A Grapevine and 4A Kennedale each recorded regional semifinal wins Friday in UIL girls soccer playoff action.

Grapevine (18-6-3) meets Wichita Falls Rider (18-2-3) at 10 a.m. Saturday in Wichita Falls, Kennedale (24-2-0) plays host to Abilene Wylie (22-4-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday, and Martin (22-3-1) plays Flower Mound (14-3-6) at noon Saturday in Midland.

GIRLS

Kennedale 7, Stephenville 1

Why Kennedale won: Senior midfielder Allie Thornton recorded three goals and two assists to lead the Wildcats past the Honeybees 7-1 in a Class 4A Region I semifinal at Kennedale.

Key players: Thornton, an SMU signee, has 39 goals this season. Other Kennedale goals were from Abby Olmos, a header by Lauren Otts, and by Eryka McIntyre and Bailey Crowley in the second half.

Key stat: Kennedale beat Saturday’s regional final opponent, Abilene Wylie, 5-0 in February.

Records: Kennedale 24-2-0, Stephenville 18-5-2.

Arlington Martin 1, Plano 0

Why Arlington Martin won: Haley Riley converted a penalty kick (her 19th goal of the season) with 3:57 left in regulation, and that was enough for the 1-0 win in Friday’s Class 6A Region I semifinal in Midland.

Key players: Martin’s Haley Ober was taken down inside the box by a Plano defender to give the Warriors the penalty kick. Six minutes earlier, Martin goalkeeper Madeline Wasden had punched a Plano shot over the top of the goal. The senior had 13 saves and recorded her 14th shutout and 20th win of the season.

Key stats: The Warriors advance to their first regional final since 1998’s state championship team. They face Flower Mound at noon Saturday in Midland.

Records: Martin 22-3-1, Plano 12-6-4

Grapevine 3, El Paso Jefferson 0

Why Grapevine won: In a 5A girls Region II semifinal, the Mustangs poured on the first-half offense and goalkeeper Katy Hutson shut down a second-half breakaway to preserve the 3-0 win over El Paso Jefferson.

Key players: Senior captain Michelle Kotlik had a goal and an assist. Other goals came from Jordan Slim, who put the Mustangs ahead for good in the 15th minute with a blast, and Anna Qualls. Sophia Smith and Ashton Wright also had assists.

Key stat: The Mustangs meet Wichita Falls Rider next. Grapevine is seeking its second consecutive trip to state.

Records: Grapevine 18-6-3, El Paso Jefferson 21-4-1

Frisco Centennial 3, Mansfield Lake Ridge 1

Why Centennial won: After almost 60 minutes of scoreless play in this 5A Region II semifinal, goals came fast and furious for the Titans as they rolled to a 3-1 victory.

Key Players: Centennial’s Katelyn Termini had two goals, one a penalty kick in the 65th minute, and teammate Rhette Caulian added the other. A goal by Breanna Morris averted a shutout in the 71st minute.

Key Stat: Lake Ridge goal keeper Brooke Lampe had 12 saves before Centennial opened up the scoring. She finished with 16.

Records: Centennial 20-2-2, Lake Ridge 17-5-3.

Frisco 4, Mansfield Legacy 0

Why Frisco won: The Raccoons kept the pressure on Mansfield Legacy down the right side of the field for the whole first half of the Class 5A Region II semifinal at Standridge Stadium. Midfielder Julia Lenhardt broke through by beating her defender down the right and getting fouled in the box in the 19th minute. Frisco added three more goals in the second half for a 4-0 win.

Key players: Lenhardt converted the penalty kick, and teammate Olivia Klein scored two of Frisco’s second-half goals on breakaway runs, in the 51st and 54th minutes.

Key stat: Frisco had 14 shots on goal to Legacy’s three. Legacy had outscored playoff opponents 14-0 before the Frisco match.

Records: Frisco 22-2-2, Legacy 17-5-1

BOYS

El Paso Eastlake 4, Grapevine 1

Why El Paso Eastlake won: Although there were some good chances in the first 60 minutes, including Grapevine’s August Bergjans hitting the crossbar midway through the second half, Eastlake poured it on late, with four of the game’s five goals scored in the last 17 minutes of a 4-1 victory in a 5A Region I semifinal.

Key players: Eastlake’s Larry Segura had two goals and an assist, and teammate Jonathan Hernandez added a goal and three assists.

Key stat: Grapevine’s Chad Sahinkaya also had a first-half goal waived off.

Records: El Paso Eastlake 18-2-4, Grapevine 15-9-2

Frisco Wakeland 6, Mansfield Lake Ridge 0

Why Wakeland won: The Wolverines grabbed an early goal in the seventh minute and then exploded for three more goals over the final 10 minutes of the first half. Wakeland won the boys 5A Region II semifinal 6-0.

Key players: Wakeland’s Harris Partain scored the Wolverines’ first two goals and added an assist early in the second half. Lake Ridge forward Malik Key was usually involved in the Eagles’ most threatening offensive opportunities. Johnathan Alexander hit the right post on a shot in the second half.

Key stat: Wakeland had six shots on goal in the first half compared to one for Lake Ridge. The Eagles created several opportunities through the first half-hour of the game but couldn’t convert them into quality shots at Wolverines keeper Daniel Patrick.

Records: Frisco Wakeland 23-0-1, Lake Ridge 21-5-0
