It’s playoff time, and Ryan Osborne and Travis L. Brown are breaking down the week’s biggest games, highlighted by the bi-district matchups between Southlake Carroll and Mansfield and Euless Trinity and South Grand Prairie.
Southlake Carroll (10-0) vs. Mansfield (7-3)
9 p.m. Friday, AT&T Stadium, Arlington
Ryan: Mansfield has showed plenty of promise the last few weeks, with impressive wins over South Grand Prairie and Cedar Hill. Those were made possible by a strong rushing attack from sophomore Kennedy Brooks. A ball-control strategy should be beneficial against Southlake Carroll, but the Dragons also have Ryan Agnew. The senior quarterback has found ways to win games for two years now, including close victories this year over Westlake, Tulsa Union and Euless Trinity. Carroll advances.
Travis: Mansfield finished the season strong, posting wins over Cedar Hill and South Grand Prairie. With that newfound success, it’s unlucky for the Tigers to draw Southlake Carroll in the first round of the playoffs. Mansfield certainly could give Carroll a run for its money, but the Dragons have proved that they can play against tough teams throughout the season. Carroll should win this one but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was close in a game that was similar to the Euless Trinity win.
Euless Trinity (9-1) vs. So. Grand Prairie (5-5)
8 p.m. Saturday, AT&T Stadium
Ryan: SGP is better than its 5-5 record suggests, coming out of a tough District 8-6A, which includes DeSoto and Cedar Hill. But Trinity, per usual, has been one of the top teams in the area behind a familiar power rushing attack. The Trojans should take care of business, setting up what should be a playoff run that eventually will cross paths with DeSoto or Allen.
Travis: This is no cakewalk bi-district game for Trinity as South Grand Prairie is much better than its 5-5 record indicates. I’ll be interested to see if Trinity can get it short passing game going early in the playoffs, which is something they’ll need to make a deep run. Trinity will advance in another first-round matchup that could be close at halftime.
FW Arlington Heights (10-0) vs.
Burleson Centennial (7-3)
7:30 p.m. Friday, Vernon Newsom Stadium, Mansfield
Ryan: This is one of the more tightly matched games in the area. Heights has been the top Fort Worth team this year, while Centennial finished second behind Aledo in District 8-5A. Heights should win this. Quarterback Deion Hair’Griffin can get to the edge against almost any defense. The junior should be able to do the same against Centennial.
Travis: What stands out to me about Arlington Heights is its defense that, save for the South Hills game, held opponents to just over 10 points per game. That’s the kind of defense, even in a weak district, that can make a playoff run and will pick up the win this week.
DeSoto (9-1) vs. Coppell (6-4)
9 p.m. Thursday, AT&T Stadium
Ryan: Poor Coppell. Cowboys always seem to meet DeSoto early in the playoffs. Eagles should win again.
Travis: Coppell is a team that could make some noise in the first few rounds of the playoffs if they didn’t have to face DeSoto in the first round. The Cowboys’ season will end earlier than it probably should.
Keller (5-5) vs. Plano West (8-2)
6 p.m. Thursday, AT&T Stadium
Ryan: It’s been a good run for Keller this year, getting back to the playoffs. But Plano West has the best RB in the state in Soso Jamabo. West wins.
Travis: Soso Jamabo. Plano West wins.
McKinney Boyd (7-3) vs. Fossil Ridge (7-3)
6 p.m. Friday, AT&T Stadium
Ryan: Keller Fossil Ridge should be sharper this week, after losing to Trophy Club Nelson. But I’ll take Boyd.
Travis: I’m really impressed by this McKinney Boyd team. Having to face Plano West earlier this season is perfect practice to enable Boyd to take this game.
Allen (10-0) vs. Keller Central (6-4)
5 p.m. Saturday, AT&T Stadium
Ryan: Another solid season from Keller Central, which challenged Arlington Martin in the first round last year. But Allen is Allen. Eagles roll.
Travis: Central is the most unlucky of them all drawing Allen in the first round. Allen takes its first step toward the state title game.
San Angelo Central (9-1) vs. Arl. Bowie (7-3)
7 p.m. Friday, San Angelo Stadium
Ryan: Another tight first-round matchup. I’ll take Bowie, whose speed should keep Central on its heels at home.
Travis: This might be one of the closest matchups this week. Give me Bowie’s athleticism to win.
Odessa Permian (7-3) vs.
Arlington Sam Houston (7-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Ratliff Stadium, Odessa
Ryan: This is seemingly a toss-up. If Ervin Hill gets going like he tends to do, then Sam Houston will win. But I have to give the edge now to Mojo, since the Panthers are at home.
Travis: This Sam Houston team isn’t scared of the big game as they’ve shown this season and I think that they will go into Ratliff Stadium and take the upset.
Cedar Hill (8-2) vs. Colleyville Heritage (5-5)
2 p.m. Saturday, AT&T Stadium,
Ryan: Cedar Hill should have no problem advancing to the second round en route its 6A Division II title defense.
Travis: Colleyville Heritage is a very underrated team and gave Southlake Carroll quite the scare earlier this season. That being said, Cedar Hill one of the best in the state this year and will win.
FW South Hills (9-1) vs. Burleson (5-5)
7:30 p.m. Friday, Brewer Bear Stadium, Fort Worth
Ryan: South Hills has the speed at the skill positions to overcome a hot Burleson squad.
Travis: Burleson won’t be able stop the high-octane offense South Hills boasts this year.
Dallas South Oak Cliff (7-3) vs. Lancaster (7-3)
7:30 p.m. Friday, Midlothian ISD Stadium
Ryan: South Oak Cliff will win this one, which will probably be the most enticing first-round game in the area.
Travis: South Oak Cliff has great Division I talent on its team this year and that will be hard to overcome. SOC wins.
