Fort Worth Trimble Tech boys lose in overtime to Amarillo

Michael Dawn couldn’t beat Fort Worth Trimble Tech with his jump shot in regulation, but the Amarillo senior guard did put away the game in overtime at the free-throw line.

Dawn hit six free throws in the final 1:04 of overtime, keeping Trimble Tech at a distance as Amarillo went on to win 49-42 in the Class 4A Region I semifinals Friday at The Coliseum.

Trimble Tech (26-7) led 29-23 after three quarters before Dawn scored 13 points in the final eight minutes of regulation.

But Trimble Tech, behind a bucket from Spencer Franklin with 27 seconds left, was able to tie the game at 40-40 and hold off a would-be game winner from Dawn near the regulation buzzer.

Trimble Tech’s offense could never regain the momentum in overtime that it had in the final 1:09 of the fourth quarter.

Franklin put in a layup with 1:56 left in OT, but that would be the Bulldogs’ last bucket as Amarillo (26-5) on the next possession found an open John Hood for a layup to take the lead.

After holding Trimble Tech from going up by one, Amarillo got Dawn to the line where he sank two free throws to give the Sandies a 45-42 lead. From there, Trimble Tech went into foul mode.

The Bulldogs’ 29-23 lead heading into the fourth quarter evaporated in seven seconds beginning with 6:30 left in regulation.

Franklin was called for a charge. Trimble Tech coach Wendell Ivory then was tagged with a technical foul.

After sinking both of those free throws, Dawn hit a 3-pointer to put Amarillo up 30-29. He finished with 26 points.
