It took all of three seconds for Aledo to win the tipoff, run a fast break and finish it with a layup from Kaylee Black.
Burleson would get its points Wednesday night, but Aledo’s offensive attack from start to finish was too overwhelming, as the Bearcats notched a 69-53 win in a Class 4A bi-district game at Mansfield High School.
Aledo (26-3) is scheduled to play in the area round at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Saginaw Chisholm Trail High School against Trophy Club Nelson, which beat Birdville on Monday night.
Aledo surged to a 28-17 lead to end the first quarter after leading 7-0 less than a minute into the game. Burleson (18-12) would prevent it from being a blowout most of the night, hitting five 3-pointers in the first quarter to hold Aledo’s lead to 44-29 by halftime.
Because of icy conditions on area roads, Wednesday’s game came 24 hours after it was originally scheduled. The game capped an eight-day layoff for Aledo, which ended its regular season Feb. 4 with a 60-57 win over Fort Worth Trimble Tech.
“We’ve been off awhile,” Aledo coach Mike Pinkerton said. “Due to the UIL restrictions this year, we didn’t have room for a warm-up game. We had to get out there and knock the cobwebs off. We didn’t play really well. That’s just the bottom line.”
Pinkerton said Aledo has to play better on defense.
“We knew [Burleson] could shoot — we just didn’t close out,” Pinkerton said. “We were leaving shooters open in the wrong spots and not helping out on defense, and that’s not what we had worked on.”
The combo of Alyssa Dry and Justis Szczepanski-Beavers gave Aledo a comfortable cushion in the first half, though. Dry scored 10 points in the opening quarter, finishing with 14, while Szczepanski-Beavers led the Bearcats with 18 points.
Sophomore guard Merrical Miller led Burleson with 15 points.
