Every time Euless Trinity got close, either Tory Jacobs or Tana Driver was there to put Irving MacArthur back into a comfortable lead.
The result was MacArthur defeating the Trojans 58-46 on Friday night at Trinity High School.
Trinity (20-8, 7-4 District 6-5A) missed a chance to catch the Cardinals (20-5, 9-2) in the league standings.
After trailing by nine early in the second half, Trinity trimmed the MacArthur lead to 34-29 with 2:10 left in the third quarter, only to see the lead balloon back to 13 over the next two minutes. Driver manufactured a pair of three-point plays sandwiched around a driving layup to put MacArthur comfortably ahead 42-29.
Trinity got within six midway through the fourth quarter, but again, Jacobs and Driver stepped up. Jacobs sank three free throws and a layup over the next three minutes, while Driver made two more buckets.
Trinity was led by Tahnia McDaniel, who scored 19 points. She hit four 3-pointers, including one at the third-quarter buzzer that cut MacArthur’s lead to 10.
Trinity Oliver added 12 points but no other Trojan player had more than five.
Driver and Jacobs led MacArthur with 26 points each, scoring all but six of their team’s points. Jacobs did most of her damage in the first half, with 17 points, while Driver fueled the second-half effort with 19.
Trinity never led in the game.
Jacobs provided the separation for MacArthur in the second quarter. After Trinity tied the game at 13, Jacobs scored six of MacArthur’s next eight points as the Cardinals’ lead swelled to 21-13 before reaching halftime ahead 27-21.
MacArthur made the most of its trips to the free throw line, as Driver and Jacobs combined to make 26 points from the charity stripe.
