The Southlake Carroll girls basketball team was down 14-12 and struggling to get into an offensive rhythm Friday night against Keller.
Then the Dragons got the spark they needed just before halftime.
Senior guard Gretchen Morrison made two 3-pointers with a pair of free throws between on consecutive possessions, an eight-point outburst that gave Carroll a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
The Dragons finished off Keller 45-34 at Carroll’s gymnasium to remain undefeated in District 4-5A.
Morrison’s run before halftime happened in a span of less than 40 seconds in the final minute of the second quarter. She finished with 10 points on a night that saw both teams struggle at times scoring.
Carroll (13-2, 5-0) led 7-5 after the first quarter, but didn’t hit a field goal until four minutes into the game.
Ahead 20-14 at halftime, Carroll’s lead was cut to three by a bucket from Keller’s Ryanne Johnson.
But Carroll responded with a 3-pointer from Savannah Nauwelears and a field goal from Kennedy Leonard. A 3-pointer and a bucket from Keller’s Kennedy Kress was answered by another bucket by Leonard, this time a 3-pointer.
A basket on the next possession from Morrison gave Carroll a 30-22 cushion with two minutes left in the third quarter. Keller (12-5, 4-1) wouldn’t get within six points the rest of the night.
Leonard finished with 10 points. Keller’s Alli Gribbin finished with a game-high 11 points. Priscilla Smeenge added nine points for Carroll, which plays at Keller Fossil Ridge on Tuesday. Keller hosts Keller Timber Creek on Tuesday.
