Week 4 of the Texas high school football season had plenty of standout performances from Fort Worth-area squads.

Here are high school sports editor Charles Baggarly’s main takeaways from the action:

Keller Central’s turnaround

Keller Central hasn’t won more than three games in a season since 2020, and in the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the Chargers only won one game.

But the 2025 season has been a different story. The Chargers are 3-1 and picked up their first District 4-6A victory of the year against Keller Timber Creek.

Head coach Eric Vance, who was hired before last season, has orchestrated quite the turnaround with the Central Chargers.

“They players are buying in,” Vance said. “We’re just trying to instill the culture of winning. The expectations and not being afraid to work. At the end, you’ll see work pay off. Whether it pays off or not, though, we’re going to keep working. ... Trying to take care of the little things and doing them right.”

The Chargers looked like an afterthought or an easy win in years past, but now, they have a shot to compete for a playoff spot in a competitive district. It’ll be a challenge, but Vance believes his team will “never give up.”

“I don’t think the formula changes,” Vance said. “We go to work every day. Playoffs are a long way away. What we need to worry about is winning every week.”

Central will look to continue the success against Keller in Week 5. The contest at Keller ISD Stadium is set to commence at 7 p.m. Friday.

Eaton continues strong start

Haslet Eaton started its season with a competitive game against state title contender Denton Ryan.

And from that point, the Eagles continued to impress and build momentum. That carried over to District 4-6A play, and Eaton (3-0) seized a hard fought 31-30 victory over Justin Northwest (1-3), a school district rival.

“Our kids fought to the bitter end,” Eaton coach Ellis Miller said. “We had to come up with a stop in the fourth quarter, and we had to get a first down to ice it. And they fought, and they got it done.”

Miller credited improvements on special teams and the kids’ effort.

The fight for playoff spots in 4-6A is a war, and through Week 4, Eaton has showcased it has what it takes to get back to the dance. In 2024, the Eagles went 3-5 in district and missed the postseason; one of those losses was to Northwest.

“That’s our goal,” Miller said of the playoffs. “We talk about having a vison and a goal, but you’ve got to take things one step at a time. ... We’ve got to improve.”

In Week 5, Eaton will clash will L.D. Bell in a battle of unbeaten squads. The Blue Raiders took down Keller with a last-minute field goal from kicker Grady Matcham.

“They’re a physical team, and they’re huge,” Miller said. “We have to come up with a good game plan. We’ve got to get our kids to play just as hard as they did last week. ... We’re trying to get one game at a time.”

Arlington Seguin’s wild win

Arlington Seguin (4-0) is still undefeated after a thrilling overtime victory over Grapevine.

The Cougars led the Mustangs 22-6 with two minutes left. To Grapevine’s credit, it had a miraculous comeback with a touchdown, conversion, onside kick recovery, another touchdown and a conversion.

The Mustangs took a lead with a field goal in overtime, and Seguin then attempted to match it. But the Cougars’ field goal was a fake, and Seguin won with a touchdown.

It was a gutsy win in a game where the team nearly collapsed. In the end, the win is all that matters.

The Cougars have found a way to take down solid programs, and now they’re in contention for a District 3-5A Division II playoff spot. But the challenges will get tougher from this point, with games against Timberview, Argyle and Colleyville Heritage remaining.

In Week 5, Seguin will face The Colony at 7 p.m. Thursday at the opening of Glaspie Field.
