No. 3 Brock makes quick work of Fort Worth Southwest in non-district rout
The Brock Eagles have been nothing but stellar since starting their football program back in 2011. The Eagles went 8-2 in their first full varsity season in 2013 and after joining a district in 2014, Brock went 12-2 and reached the state quarterfinals.
The following year in 2015, Brock went 16-0 and won the Class 3A, Division 1 State Championship. Now in Class 4A Division 2, nothing has changed.
Brock quarterback Holt Frazier tossed six touchdown passes and Colt Matlock had a 78-yard Pick-6 as the Eagles raced out to a big lead at the half then coasted for a 69-0 win over Fort Worth Southwest in a non-district clash on Thursday, September 18, at Scarborough-Handley Field.
“My O-line is making it super easy,” said Frazier who finished completing 13 of 17 passes for 260 yards and the six scores. “I have all the time in the world to get it to our weapons on the outside and the slots. Our running backs did great tonight, even though they didn’t get that many carries, but they were blocking for me too.”
Frazier has scoring passes of 16, 28, 14, 64, 31 and 27 yards. Braeden Ray was his favorite target with four catches for 62 yards and touchdowns of 16 and 14 yards.
“Holt Frazier is just a machine,” said Brock coach Billy Mathis of his junior quarterback. “He’s very cerebral, understanding his reads and where he’s going with the ball. The kid is just a stud.”
Brock (4-0), No. 3 in the state in Class 4A Division 2 according to Dave Campbell’s state poll and No. 2 in the Star-Telegram’s Class 4A/Private Schools rankings, had little trouble on the night other than stopping Southwest quarterback King Russell-Billingsley and running back Jeremiah Hogg, two rather large players at their positions, that proved to be very difficult to tackle.
“They were big ole boys,” said Colt Matlock, who doubles at receiver and defensive back for the Eagles. “I tried coming downhill and he just bounced off of my should pads. They were both really hard to get on the ground.”
The duo was the bulk of the Raiders’ offense as Russell-Billingsley rushed 16 times for 72 yards and Hogg had 41 yards rushing on 13 carries. Southwest (1-3) tallied 197 total yards with 156 coming on the ground.
“That’s what I love about coach (Joseph) Turner,” said Mathis. “He gets the most out of his teams and he puts them in a great spot to be competitive. Those two guys back there are an absolute load and if you stick a sissy arm out there it ain’t bringing them down.”
Matlock had a big night all around catching two passes, both for touchdowns, and returning an interception for a score. The senior had scoring receptions of 28 and 64 yards, the latter giving Brock a 41-0 lead at the break, and the 78-yard Pick-6 all in the first half.
“I’ve been waiting on that one, just to get open field,” said Matlock of the interception. “Coach put me back there to read the quarterback so I just made a play on it.”
Brock had two rushing scores. Dash Lindsey darted up the middle from five yards out to start the second quarter and T.J. Allred took a jet sweep 31-yards around left end to give the Eagles a 55-0 lead with 3:00 left in the third quarter.
Davis Lee (31 yards) and Charles Hibbler (27) each had touchdown receptions for Brock. Ray had a nice night on defense as well, picking off a pass and recovering an fumble.
Southwest’s best scoring chance came early in the fourth quarter when the Raiders marched from their own 17 to the Brock 16, but a fumble was scooped up by Eagles’ defensive back Braxon Roberts and returned 74 yards for the final score of the game. It was Roberts’ second fumble recovery of the game.
