5 high school football storylines for Week 3: A test for Southlake Carroll
Week 3 of the Texas high school football season is here.
Here are five of the top Fort Worth-area storylines for Friday’s games:
A test for No. 1 Southlake Carroll
In 2023, Byron Nelson stunned Southlake Carroll, defeating the Dragons to claim the District 4-6A title.
It was a game that showcased that, in Texas high school football, even powerhouses like Carroll can be taken down. Now, the Bobcats will have that same opportunity to start District 4-6A play at Northwest ISD Stadium.
Byron Nelson (1-1) will face No. 1 Southlake Carroll (2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Bobcats are coming off a 38-21 loss to Lewisville, while the Dragons trounced Hebron 35-7 in a weather-shortened contest. Keep an eye on Carroll quarterback Angelo Renda, the Star-Telegram Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and wide receiver Brock Boyd, the Star-Telegram Preseason Player of the Year, to power the Dragons’ offense.
Can North Crowley keep improving?
After North Crowley narrowly defeated DeSoto, the coaching staff spoke with the team after the game, bringing attention to plenty of unnecessary penalties.
There were a few lapses of judgement in Week 2, which is common for teams to start the season. North Crowley, however, has big aspirations and a high bar to meet. The Panthers will look to hone their craft against Denton Guyer at 7 p.m. Friday at the Collins Complex.
North Crowley also made a change at the quarterback position, with senior Demarcus Harris taking over for Hayes Cloutier during the DeSoto game. Jayden Shaw was also a force with several runs from the wildcat formation. As District 3-6A play approaches, North Crowley’s long-term starting QB is yet to be determined.
Arlington Heights looks to continue dominance
Fort Worth Arlington Heights started the season with two monstrous victories.
First, the Yellowjackets took down Everman 60-0 and then defeated Pinkston 59-0. In 2024, Everman nearly defeated Heights, falling 25-21.
Heights will commence District 4-5A Division I play when it faces Fort Worth North Side at 7:30 Friday at Farrington Field. It’s safe to say the team is prepared for district play.
Challenges await, but if Heights’ well-rounded performances continue, the program can establish itself as the undisputed team to watch out of Fort Worth ISD.
Timberview seeks to take down Argyle
Timberview’s defense impressed against state-ranked Denton Ryan in Week 2, despite the 20-12 loss.
Now, the Wolves have another big challenge to tackle against Argyle at 7 p.m. Friday at Eagle Stadium. Although Argyle lost its season opener 44-21 to Frisco Lone Star, the team is coming off a strong 35-7 victory over Midlothian Heritage.
Although taking down Argyle will be an extreme challenge for Timberview, it will help them get a leg up in an extremely competitive District 3-5A Division II that includes Colleyville Heritage, Arlington Seguin, Grapevine, Mansfield Summit and The Colony.
Can Crowley bounce back?
Crowley had been steadily rising heading into this season.
But so far, the Eagles have had a rough year. In Week 1, Crowley was upset by 5A squad Birdville 34-27, and in Week 2, the Eagles were no match for Houston powerhouse North Shore, losing 42-0.
Although the first two games weren’t ideal, a tough non-district slate is scheduled by design. Crowley will have a chance to bounce back at 7 p.m. Friday at Forester Field against Dallas Skyline. In 2024, Skyline seized a 31-0 victory.
