After a comeback in the second quarter, Trophy Club Byron Nelson had no answer in the third quarter.

The Bobcats went on the road Thursday night and struggled in the second half in a 38-21 loss against Lewisville at Max Goldsmith Stadium.

The Fighting Farmers scored 22 points in the third quarter to pull ahead and lock up another win against the Bobcats. Dating back to 2004, Lewisville is 4-0 against Byron Nelson.

“We tell the kids it’s a reflection of how you practice,” Byron Nelson interim head coach Zach Woodward said. “And I think our practice this week was a little bit up and down and I don’t know that our attention to detail was as good as it needed to be. And I think it showed up tonight.

“Something that we talked a lot about was that (last week) was a great win and but that was last week. Now it’s this week, so we just got to work to get better.”

Byron Nelson (1-1) trailed 9-0 early but surged ahead in the second quarter behind two touchdown passes between Parker Almanza and sophomore Nolan Hawkins.

The first came with 7:32 left in the second quarter to trim the 9-0 deficit down to 9-7, following a point after attempt by Oliver Bell.

The next time the Bobcats got the ball, they got a big play on the drive.

Almanza threw a 47-yard pass to Mahamadou Siby, which saw the senior haul in a catch despite the front of his jersey being grabbed and drawing a flag.

Facing a 4th-and-21 situation, Almanza, a Baylor commit at tight end, scrambled and threw to his right to find a wide-open Hawkins for a 28-yard score with 1:50 left in the first half.

Lewisville scored 22 points in the third quarter despite having two turnovers.

Will Myers (fumble) and Rodney Weatherspoon (interception) got the takeaways for the Bobcats, but the offense couldn’t capitalize.

Lewisville quarterback Tre Williams threw four touchdowns, three of them in the third. The senior, who holds offers from schools like Arizona State and Texas State, hit Landon Bogany for a 5-yard touchdown with 9:47 left in the third. The two had a 14-yard score for the first points in the game.

That made it 15-14 and the Farmers (2-0) went for 2. Running back Tenel Hill ran it in to extend the lead to 17-14.

Over the final 5 minutes, the Farmers scored twice.

Bryon Nelson fumbled and Lenell Lawrence recovered for the Farmers at the 24-yard line. That set up a short field and Williams connected with Landon Brazzell for a 3-yard score.

The sophomore crossed the goal line at 4:23.

Williams capped off the third with a 53-yard touchdown pass to Traejan Mueller on a tunnel screen. Mueller then raced up the middle of the field and scored with 1:15 remaining, making it 31-14.

Brazzell had another touchdown later in the game on a hook-and-lateral in the fourth.

Williams hit Mueller for an 11-yard gain and then he turned and pitched it for Brazzell, who outran the Bobcats’ defense.

“Defensively, we gave up too many big plays,” said Woodward, who is still serving as defensive coordinator this year. “We talk to them a lot about how important the angles were and playing with good fundamentals would be and then it doesn’t take much. They’re a good team and they have good players. When you’re playing a good team and your six inches off, what had been a 2-yard gain is a 40-yard touchdown.”

Almanza accounted for the final points for the Bobcats with a touchdown pass early in the fourth. He threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Reid Williams.

Malik Sorrels and Deuce Mathis II had interceptions for the Farmers in the fourth to stall two drives by the Bobcats.

After two games on the road, the Bobcats will finally have a home game next week. It will be a tough one, with Class 6A No. 1-ranked Southlake Carroll going to Justin.
