Brian Gosset: Biggest things from Week 6 of the Fort Worth-area high school football season

Week 6 has already come and gone as Fort Worth-area teams continue their march this season. A lot of action took place with impressive wins and big upsets, plus top recruits proving why they’re some of the best in the state.

Check out the best of the best from the sixth week of the Texas high school football season.

Best win

Grapevine 44, Colleyville Heritage 26

Grapevine scored 23 straight points in the second half to pull away from its district rivals, 44-26 in a District 4-5A Division 2 showdown. Grapevine, No. 8 in the Class 5A D2 state rankings and No. 6 in the Class 5A area rankings, improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in district. Heritage, No. 5 and No. 3, falls to 3-2 and 1-1.

The Mustangs beat the Panthers for the first time since 2018, snapping a three-game skid in the series. Heritage came in having won nine of the last 11 meetings, including 42-7 last season.

Grapevine finished with 534 yards of total offense with 419 coming on the ground. Evan Baum and CJ Holmes rushed for 57 and 53 yards, respectively and Rondale Carridine and Reid Watkins combined for 99 yards and a touchdown apiece.

Parker Polk, a member of the Star-Telegram Top 100, rushed for a career-high 215 yards on 26 carries and three touchdowns. Polk, who has eight TDs this season, has rushed for 100 or more yards in all five games.

Biggest Upset

Fort Worth Christian 35, Dallas Christian 24

Dallas Christian came into the week No. 2 in the private school state rankings, but Fort Worth Christian had other ideas during homecoming, with a big time win over the Chargers.

Luke Anderson rushed for 239 yards and three touchdowns to lead Fort Worth Christian, which improved to 5-0 on the season while handing the Chargers their first loss.

Anderson, a senior, carried 17 times and his touchdowns of 14, 62, and 40 yards all came in the second half.

Montana State commit Jacob Trimble also had a pair of interceptions for the Cardinals.

Aledo defeated The Colony 52-7 on Friday night to improve to 4-0 in district play. It was the Bearcats’ 107th straight district win, a national record that dates back to 2007.

The Bearcats scored on all five its first half possessions and added a pick-six.

QB Hauss Hejny rushed for both of his touchdowns in the first half and threw another on the way to netting 302 total yards and four scores. Henjy was efficient by completing 70 percent of his throws, including two to Kaydon Finley for 111 yards. Jalen Pope added three catches for 83 yards and the other score.

Aledo also forced three takeaways on the night – two in the first half.

291 yards passing

Jake Strong, Sr., QB, Justin Northwest

Four-star Texas Tech commit Jake Strong completed 70 percent of his passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns in the Texans’ 58-7 win over Azle on Friday night.

Strong is the No. 1 QB in the Fort Worth-area and 29th in the country among 2023s according to 247Sports. After the win, Northwest improved to 2-1 in district and 3-2 overall.

Strong has over 700 yards passing and eight TDs in three games this season versus zero interceptions.

Murry Moore, Jr., RB, Fort Wort Dunbar

Murry Moore rushed for 346 yards, 224 in the second half, and one touchdown as the Wildcats ran away from Fort Worth Western Hills 60-33 in a District 6-4A Division 1 football game on Thursday night.

Dunbar went to 2-0 in distrct play while scoring 60 points for the second consecutive week.

Moore carried the ball 34 times, almost as many rushes as the entire Western Hills team (38), and out rushed the Cougars (254) by almost 100 yards.

119 yards receiving

Brady Janusek, Soph., WR, Argyle Liberty Christian

Brady Janusek had another big game to help lead Argyle Liberty Christian to a 38-0 win over Frisco Legacy.

Janusek hauled in six catches for 119 yards and both touchdowns from Jacob Vaughan as the Warriors (5-1) dominated both sides of the ball against the Eagles.

The Warriors won two games each of the past two seasons and three in 2019. It’s the first time Liberty Christian has won five of their first six games since 2015.

Liberty is coached by former Dallas Cowboy tight end Jason Witten.
