Basketball recap (1/21): Peaster boys fight off Brock in key district game and more from Fort Worth area

Boys

Peaster 44, Brock 41

Tramar Gilbert scored 20 points and the Greyhounds out lasted the Eagles in a key District 8-3A showdown at Brock on Tuesday night.

Peaster (18-7, 7-0) took over sole possession of first place after the first round of district play.

Brock dropped to 18-7 and 6-1.

The two teams traded the lead several times in the first quarter. Brock went up 9-6 on a Sawyer Strosnider layup and Trey Stuart three-point play. Peaster would get back-to-back threes to end the quarter up 11-9, the second coming from the corner by Gilbert.

Gilbert fed big man Noah Drenth on two straight Peaster possessions, which included a two-handed flush and the game was tied at 18 in the second quarter. The Greyhounds led 26-22 at halftime.

Brock was able to take the lead at 32-31 on a Tyce Gentry free throw, but Gilbert came down and scored and Brock never led again. Peaster built the lead to 39-33 early in the fourth quarter.

The three points in the final seconds would be the closest the Eagles would get in the period.

Drenth, Jerrin Canafax and Shon Ealey all had six points for Peaster.

Keller 51, Southlake Carroll 49

Blake Bahr drove to the basket and his layup with four seconds left pushed the Indians past the Dragons in a District 4-6A game.

Keller, No. 3 in the area 6A rankings, improved to 19-8 and 6-0 while Carroll fell to 12-12 and 2-4.

Bahr led all scorers with 23 points. Grayson Price and Parker Hannah added seven and six points.

Carroll had three players in double digits with Ben Estis putting in a team-high 16 points. Carter Ruck had 14 and Christian O’Connor chipped in 11.

Keller came out with the 18-10 first-quarter lead, but Carroll went ahead at halftime, 25-23. The two teams scored 15 points in the third quarter and Keller edged out Carroll 13-9 in the fourth.

Arlington Bowie 53, Arlington 44

A huge fourth quarter sent the Bowie Vols to the District 8-6A win over the Colts. Bowie out scored Arlington 21-4 in the final period.

Kelby Valsin led Bowie with 19 points. Amari Woods added 15 and Devon Campbell chipped in 10.

Arlington, which was led by Tyler Burleson’s 18 points, led Bowie 19-13 after the first quarter. Burleson hit a pair of threes and Marshaun Vann, who had 10 points, went 4 of 4 from the free-throw line.

The Colts still had the lead at the break and even extended it to 40-32 after three quarters. But Arlington was held to just two field goals, both from Vann, in the fourth quarter.

Campbell scored eight points in the period and Bowie went 6 of 7 from the charity stripe.

Azle 56, Granbury 41

Three Azle Hornets scored in double figures led by Gavin Dean’s 14 points in a decisive win in District 5-5A.

Jackson Davis and Jayden Coffey added 13 and 12 points.

Azle’s defense shut down the Pirates in the opening quarter as the Hornets led 18-5. Granbury got it to 10 at half, but Azle extended the lead to 46-30 after the third quarter.

Jayden Rollins and Cooper Morgan chipped in eight and six points for Azle.

Kensington Colston led Granbury with a game-high 21 points. Sawyer Schenework added nine.

Mansfield Timberview 70, Burleson Centennial 54

Five Timberview Wolves scored in double digits as the top-ranked Class 5A area team picked up another win in District 8-5A.

Chendall Weaver led the way with 17 points while Donovan O’Day added 14. Braylon Crosby, Daniel Tucker and Jared Washington all chipped in 11 points and Tyler Turner rounded out the scoring for the Wolves with six.

Both team struggled to score in the opening period, but Timberview found itself ahead 14-9. The Wolves started to pull away with a 21-11 advantage in the second quarter and 19-17 in the third quarter.

Timberview improved to 24-3 and 7-0.

Centennial dropped to 18-9 and 2-5. The Spartans were led by Bryce Robinson, who had 17 points and four rebounds. Braden Elrod added 10 points and Jordan Weeks had eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Keller Timber Creek 51, Keller Fossil Ridge 35

Caleb Smith scored a game-high 22 points and the Timber Creek Falcons picked up their first win in District 4-6A.

Timber Creek (15-9 overall) out scored Ridge in the first three quarters, leading 15-11 after the opening period. The Falcons upped the lead to 28-17 at the break and 42-24 after the third.

Kam Vicente added 13 points for the Falcons and Jacob Porter chipped in eight.

Kwamir McBean led Ridge with 19 points.

Girls

Boswell 74, LD Bell 55

In a battle of the top two teams in District 3-6A, the Boswell Pioneers went into LD Bell and came out victorious to stay unbeaten in district play.

Behind Nya Robertson’s 24 points and Miraya Perkins’ 20, Boswell improved to 9-0 in 3-6A.

Boswell is No. 2 in the area 6A rankings while Robertson leads the Fort Worth-area in points per game.

The Pioneers came out strong with 27 first-quarter points and led 27-17 after the opening eight minutes. Boswell upped the lead to 49-24 heading into halftime.

Bell (21-8, 7-2) was once again led by twins Hallie Rhodes and Jayden Rhodes, who combined for 45 points. Hallie had a team-high 23. The Blue Raiders trimmed the lead after a 16-10 third quarter, but the deficit was too large to overcome.

Alena DeLeon added 14 points for Boswell.

Keller Fossil Ridge 43, Keller Timber Creek 42

The Panthers picked up a huge District 4-6A win over the Falcons after rallying back from a 24-18 halftime deficit.

Jade Masogayo, the reigning all-area defensive player of the year, dropped a game-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half. Masogayo made seven field goals after the break and went 3 of 4 from the line. She scored 11 of the team’s 13 points in the third quarter.

Ridge, which also has a win over Keller this season (both Keller and Timber Creek are in the 6A area Top 5), out scored the Falcons 13-7 in the third to even the score at 31-31.

Adriana Robles scored nine for the Panthers.

KJ Walker and Deja Lumsden led Timber Creek with 17 and 10 points.

FW Southwest Christian 55, Frisco Legacy Christian 45

Ananda Jenerson scored 16 points and Karsen Bryan added 15 as the Eagles continued to stay unbeaten in district play.

The Eagles improved to 13-7 overall and 5-0 in district.

Haylee Davis and Mary Grace King scored eight points apiece for Southwest Christian.

Richland 39, Denton 30

Audreianna Graves led with a team-high 14 points as the Royals hung on to beat the Broncos in District 6-5A.

Sara Savage added eight points for Richland and Jordyn Joseph and Madison Jackson scored seven apiece. Justice Dunlap had three points to round out the scoring.

Both teams had a hard time scoring in the first quarter with Richland leading 5-2. The Royals extended their lead to 18-7 at halftime and 32-17 after three quarters.

Denton, which was led by Selmone Griffin’s game-high 15 points, did a bit of catching up in the fourth, out scoring Richland 13-7 in the final period.

Mansfield Lake Ridge 55, Waco Midway 37

Kylie Marshall, who is in the Top 5 for points per game in the area, dropped a game-high 28 points and the Eagles beat Midway in District 11-6A.

Liz Abiara added 14 points and Tyra Coleman had eight for the Eagles.

Lake Ridge out scored Midway 21-8 after the opening frame and went into halftime up 32-18.

Peaster 68, Brock 30

Payton Hull and Brooklyn Bosher scored 28 and 27 points as the Greyhounds dominated the Eagles from the tip in a District 8-3A game.

Peaster, No. 2 in the area small school rankings, led 20-4 after the first quarter. Hull and Bosher scored all of the Greyhounds’ points in the period with Bosher leading with 12.

The lead continued to grow to 24-6 after a steal and basket from Bosher and 27-10 after a corner three by Hull, an ACU commit.

Brock was paced by Halli Hyatt, who got a three-point play in the second quarter. Hallie McPherson added a corner three and Marifer Davila got a pair of layups.

Hyatt had 10 points while Davila and McPherson each had six.

Bosher hit a long three to beat the second-quarter buzzer and Landry Robertson hit Kylie Ruddy for a score in the third as Peaster led 54-26 after three.

Robertson scored seven points for Peaster.
