Toma Zaleckaite made a layup at the buzzer to help the UT Arlington women rebound from a season-opening loss, defeating Jacksonville 56-54 in the consolation bracket of the Preseason WNIT on Friday at College Park Center.
The Mavericks (1-1) advance to meet McNeese State at 7:15 tonight at the College Park Center. Dartmouth will play Jacksonville in the early game at 5 p.m.
Jacksonville hit two free throws with five-tenths of a second remaing. Under a new NCAA rule, UTA called a timeout to advance the ball to halfcourt and made a lob pass to the 6-foot-3 Zaleckaite, who scored on a layin.
Morgan Holly led UTA with 10 points. Cierra Johnson had nine points and five rebounds, and LaShanda Green added eight and five rebounds. Zaleckaite and Amara Wainwright each chipped in with seven. UTA was led on the boards by Rebekah Van Dijk with six.
