William Sumlin, the pioneering high school coach and father of Texas A&M football coach Kevin Sumlin, died Sunday at 81.
The elder Sumlin was a football, baseball and basketball coach in Alabama and later in Indiana. He saw his son become the first black head coach at a major college in Texas when Kevin took over at Houston, and then five years later become the first black head coach at Texas A&M.
Texas A&M confirmed William Sumlin’s death, but no cause was given.
