Two career highs help UTA win on road again

Kevin Hervey and Erick Neal both recorded career-highs, with 27 and 24 points respectively, and UT Arlington topped Rice 92-74 on Sunday.

Hervey tied a career high with 15 rebounds and Neal was a perfect 9 of 9 from the floor and had six assists. Drew Charles finished with 17 points with four 3-pointers.

“I knew it was a matter of time before our guys had the lid come off the basket. You saw it with Drew,” UTA coach Scott Cross said. He was on fire and got us going in the first half.

“The thing that concerned me was were we going to defend once we started hitting shots?”

Egor Koulechov scored a career-high 28 points with eight rebounds to pace Rice (2-5). Marcus Evans had 12 points and Max Guercy added 10 points with eight assists.

UT Arlington (5-1) got a 3-pointer from Charles early to lead 18-8.

“It wasn’t just me that shot it well. Erick shot it well. Hervey got it going in the second half,” Charles said. “We shot almost 50 percent on 3-pointers.”

Rice got within three on a layup by Koulechov with 7:21 in the first, but the Mavericks scored the next eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers by Neal, and led 51-38 at intermission.

An 8-0 spurt midway through the second half, including a 3-pointer by Hervey, pushed the lead to 18 and UTA cruised from there.
