Kevin Hervey scored a season-high 29 points and added 11 rebounds as the UT Arlington men’s basketball team rallied past Rice 69-49 Wednesday night at College Park Center in Arlington.
Hervey, who recorded his 27th career double-double, was 10-of-18 shooting including five 3-pointers. The former Arlington Bowie standout moved into eighth place on the school’s career scoring list with 1,248 points.
UTA (6-1) trailed by eight early but forged a 35-21 halftime lead behind first-half runs of 15-0 and 7-0.
The Mavericks, who have won four consecutive games, held the Owls (2-5) to 25 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers. UTA outrebounded Rice 42-37 and outscored them in the paint 32-10.
Senior center Johnny Hamilton added 17 points and eight rebounds, and senior point guard Erick Neal contributed five points, five rebounds and eight assists.
Rice bolted to an 8-0 lead but then went scoreless for nearly nine minutes as UTA grabbed a 15-8 lead. The Mavericks finished off the first half with a 7-0 run.
UTA returns to action Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts North Texas at College Park Center.
