Tennessee and new coach Rick Barnes will come to Fort Worth for a game against TCU as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge in January.
The Horned Frogs and Volunteers have met only one time, a 73-59 TCU victory in 2001. But the Horned Frogs and Barnes are familiar with each other from Barnes’ time with Texas in the Big 12.
The game time and network – either ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU – will be announced later. All 10 games in the conference vs. conference challenge will be played on Jan. 30, a Saturday in the middle of the conference schedules.
“The Big 12 is proud to once again take part in the Challenge,” Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said in a statement released by the conference. “Our teams have had unprecedented success on the basketball court over the last two seasons, and we are excited to provide the fans more quality opponents on the schedules.”
It is the third year for the conference vs. conference matchup. The Big 12 won the challenge each of the first two years, 13-7 combined. TCU defeated Mississippi State two years ago and Ole Miss last year.
TCU is coming off an 18-14 season, its best under fourth-year coach Trent Johnson. The Horned Frogs lost their top two scorers, but have signed four players for next season.
Here are the other matchups, with a fact provided by the conference:
