David McWilliams, a former Texas football player (1960-63) and head football coach (1987-91) who grew up in Cleburne, will retire from his post as a school administrator on Aug. 31, University of Texas officials announced Friday. McWilliams, a longtime assistant coach under Darrell Royal and Fred Akers, has spent most of the past 55 years in some capacity with the school. McWilliams, who spent one year as the Texas Tech coach (1986) before taking over the Texas program the next season, will be honored for his service to his alma mater during the Longhorns’ Sept. 19 game in Austin against California.
