A look at the four baseball teams competing in Fort Worth Regional

TCU (43-11)

Location: Fort Worth

Enrollment: 10,033

Overview: After winning the Big 12 regular-season title, the Horned Frogs went two-and-out at the Big 12 tournament. Still, they earned the No. 7 national seed for the second straight year.

Pitching: Right-hander Mitchell Traver will start Friday against Sacred Heart. Traver leads TCU’s starters with a 1.95 ERA, but Alex Young (2.10), Preston Morrison (2.69) and Tyler Alexander (2.92) aren’t far behind.

Hitting: Leadoff hitter Cody Jones is batting .376 with four home runs and an on-base percentage of .476. Evan Skoug leads the team with six home runs and 38 RBIs.

Notable: TCU is 21-17 all-time in NCAA Regionals play, with four regional tournament wins (2009, 2010, 2012, 2014).

North Carolina State (34-21)

Location: Raleigh, N.C.

Enrollment: 34,009

Overview: NC State reached the College World Series in 2013 but missed the postseason last year. Now, they’re rolling, as winners of 13 of their past 16, including a 3-1 run in the ACC tournament.

Hitting: Logan Ratledge leads the Wolfpack with a .330 batting average and a .433 on-base percentage. Preston Palmeiro, a Colleyville Heritage graduate and son of Rafael Palmeiro, has seven home runs and a team-high 48 RBIs.

Pitching: Nationally, the Wolfpack is first in hits allowed per nine innings (6.7), second in strikeouts per nine innings (9.4) and 12th in ERA (2.93).

Notable: NC State’s first-round opponent, Stony Brook, beat the Wolfpack in the 2010 NCAA Regionals. ... Freshman third baseman Joe Dunand is a nephew of Alex Rodriguez.

Stony Brook (34-14-1)

Location: Stony Brook, N.Y.

Enrollment: 24,149

Overview: The Seawolves reached the College World Series in 2012, but this is their first postseason appearance since then. They won the American East tournament with a 16-11 win over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Hitting: Jack Parenty is hitting a team-high .359 and has 46 RBIs. Cole Peragine has been a consistent four-year starter, and he’s hitting .302 this year with a team-high .451 on-base percentage.

Pitching: Left hander Daniel Zamora is the team’s ace with a 7-2 record, a 3.03 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings. He’ll start Friday against NC State. Cameron Stone leads the team with six saves behind a 0.72 ERA in 25 innings.

Notable: Cleanup hitter Robert Chavarria is 5-foot-6.

Sacred Heart (23-30-1)

Location: Fairfield, Conn.

Enrollment: 4,173

Overview: Sacred Heart started the season 3-14-1 before turning the page once the weather warmed. Since April 2, the Pioneers have gone 20-16, including a Northeast Conference tournament win over Bryant.

Hitting: Jesus Medina was the Northeast Conference tournament MVP, and he’s batting a team-high .327 for the season. Zack Short is batting .302 with team-highs of nine home runs and 38 RBIs.

Pitching: James Cooksey will start Friday against TCU. He’s 7-2 with a 3.50 ERA. Dan Wertz leads the team with a 2.31 ERA in 50 2/3 innings. Wertz is 4-1.

Notable: Former major league manager Bobby Valentine is Sacred Heart’s athletic director.
