Jhasmin Player is currently thriving as an assistant coach of the women's basketball team at the University of Maine.
But there was time were her future in the sport seemed uncertain.
Thanks to a standout career at Bay City High School in Bay City, Texas, she was recruited to join the Baylor Lady Bears basketball team by head coach Kim Mulkey right after the program captured its first national title.
But Player hardly saw any playing time in her first collegiate season.
And when her mother saw how much her daughter was struggling with the situation, she had a conversation with Mulkey.
Here's how Player described the interaction between her mother and her then-head coach in a video on Twitter.
By the end of her career at Baylor, though, Player had started for three years and was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection as a junior.
As a co-captain in 2008, she also set an example for future star Brittney Griner, who would lead the program to its second national title in 2012.
