UT Arlington surrenders lead, runs out of steam vs. Dallas Baptist

UT Arlington cruised through the first five innings of its nonconference game Tuesday night against Dallas Baptist, but the Mavericks couldn’t hold the lead in a 7-3 loss at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington.

UTA (23-23) struck early, with Darien McLemore delivering a run-scoring single and Bracy Cox scoring on Quentin Rohrbaugh’s sacrifice bunt. In the second, the Mavs extended their lead to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly by Cody Farrell.

But the Mavs managed only three hits the rest of the way, and their bullpen was unable to keep the Patriots’ bats under wraps.

DBU (29-14) got a run back in the fifth, then went ahead 4-3 in the sixth behind a solo homer by Trooper Reynolds and Jameson Hannah’s two-run shot. Hannah added a two-run triple in the eighth, and Daniel Sweet’s solo shot in the ninth was the final blow.

Mavericks Brad Vassar pitched four-plus innings, giving up one run and racking up three strikeouts. Matt Michalski gave up three runs in 1  1/3 innings of relief and was tagged with the loss.

“Brad [Vassar] did a good job early on in hanging some zeros up there,”coach Darin Thomas said. “We got a lead, but DBU did a good job, too, of coming back. ... They pitched us well and we weren’t able to get to them late.”

UTA visits Sun Belt foe Arkansas-Little Rock for a three-game series this weekend beginning Friday.
