Fort Worth Regional: TCU loses 5-4 to NC State

Riley Ferrell gave up a two-run homer to Chance Shepard with two outs in the ninth inning, and TCU couldn’t come back, as the Horned Frogs lost 5-4 Saturday night in the NCAA Fort Worth Regional.

The loss sends TCU to the losers bracket, where they’ll play Stony Brook at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Lupton Stadium.

NC State’s comeback, which featured Shepard drilling a 1-1 pitch to centerfield, erased TCU starter Preston Morrison’s eight innings of three-run ball. Before the ninth, the Wolfpack had only scored in one inning, the fourth, when it touched Morrison for three runs, two of which were earned.

TCU regained the lead in seventh inning on an RBI flyout by Garrett Crain, who scored in the third on an inside the park home run. His line drive to left field skipped under the glove of Brock Deatherage, who had to chase the ball to the warning track. When Deatherage’s throw sailed past the cutoff, Crain was waved home to put TCU up 1-0.
