TCU baseball's quest for a fifth consecutive trip to the College World Series will include some familiar faces, of course, but a chunk of the Horned Frogs' roster is filled with new faces. Many of the new players will be called upon to help fill the void left by the departure of six everyday starters. Here's a look at TCU's probable starting lineup in 2018:
2018 Starting Lineup
C Zach Humphreys, Soph.
Humphreys takes over behind the plate for three-year starter Evan Skoug. Humphreys hit .267 with 19 RBIs as a freshman after becoming the full-time designated hitter in May.
1B Luken Baker, Jr.
The preseason All-American saw his sophomore season cut short after having surgery on his left arm in May. He'll be the focal point of the offense after hitting .317 with 41 RBIs and 39 runs scored. He reached safely in his last 29 games.
2B Coby Boulware, Fr.
The high school All-American had a school-record 146 hits and 59 stolen bases at Anthem (Ariz.) Boulder Creek High School.
3B Conner Shepherd, Soph.
He hit .314 with 17 extra-base hits and 31 RBIs as a redshirt freshman at Mt. San Antonio College after redshirting his freshman season at Florida International.
SS Adam Oviedo, Fr.
The Alvarado graduate was ranked Baseball America's No. 133 draft prospect before being selected by the Twins in the 35th round in the June 2017 draft. He hit .436 with 29 RBIs and 41 runs scored along with 11 doubles, six triples and six home runs for a .872 slugging percentage as a senior.
LF Josh Watson, Jr.
The Arlington Martin graduate will be counted on to rebound after following his 11-homer, 44-RBI freshman season with just one homer in 2017. Watson has 82 RBIs in two seasons, including 38 in '17. He had six outfield assists as a sophomore.
CF Johnny Rizer, Jr.
The Cy-Fair graduate hit .354 with 11 homers at Blinn College last year. He had 14 at-bats his freshman season at Louisiana Lafayette before transferring to Blinn.
RF Connor Wanhanen, Sr.
The veteran from Flower Mound is just one of three seniors (or graduate students) on the roster. He's hitting .283 with 115 runs scored, 79 RBIs and 31 stolen bases in 154 games over his three seasons.
DH A.J. Balta, Sr.
The graduate student transferred from Oregon after hitting .200 with one homer and six doubles. He has 13 homers, seven triples and 25 doubles in three seasons for the Ducks. He missed the 2015 season because of injury.
RHP Jared Janczak, Jr.
The consensus preseason All-American starts the season-opener Friday night for the second consecutive year after going 9-2 with a 2.31 ERA in 2017. He is 11-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 131 1/3 innings as a starter.
