RJ Williams hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and knocked in three runs, helping UT Arlington to an 8-3 victory over Georgia Southern in Sun Belt Conference baseball on Sunday.
Joel Kuhnel had a strong pitching performance, giving up three runs on four hits in eight innings. He walked only one and struck out six against the Eagles (21-16, 11-7).
“That was an outstanding start by Joel Kuhnel,” coach Darin Thomas said. “He maintained his velocity for eight innings. We scored some runs for him early and added to it a little bit.
“I thought R.J. Williams’ home run was a big hit to get us to eight, but I can’t say enough about Joel’s outing. Those are the type of outings you need when you’re struggling.”
Tanner Houston had a two-run double in the first inning for the Mavericks (15-19, 6-9 Sun Belt), who ended a five-game losing streak.
Williams, Brady Cox and Travis Sibley had run-scoring doubles in a four-run second inning for UTA.
