Run-scoring single in ninth sparks UTA over South Alabama

RJ Williams hit a run-scoring single in the ninth inning, giving UT Arlington a walk-off, come-from-behind 5-4 victory over South Alabama in Sun Belt Conference baseball Sunday.

The win gave the Mavericks (9-7, 4-2 Sun Belt) their second conference series win this season.

“It’s good to get a series win,” UTA coach Darin Thomas said. “We were really flat early and their starter was really good. We woke up just in time and had some better at-bats late.”

UTA fell behind 4-1 after five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, the Mavericks scored on a single by Jerame Littell.

They tied it in the seventh when Levi Scott doubled and moved to third on a single by Brady Cox. Dalton DeLeon knocked in one run on a single, and the second run scored on a throwing error on the play.

UTA won the game in the ninth when Tanner Houston walked, DeLeon was hit by a pitch and Williams drove in the game winner.

The Mavericks received strong relief pitching from Daniel James and Jacob Moreland. James gave up two hits in 2 1/3 innings and Moreland one hit in 1 2/3 innings.
