Charles Drew scored 12 points and Lonnie McClanahan added 11, leading UT Arlington to a 61-57 upset of Louisiana-Monroe in Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball on Thursday night.
The victory tightens the conference race and brings the Mavericks (11-7, 5-3 Sun Belt) within a game of the Warhawks.
Monroe still leads the league with a 6-2 record. The Mavericks, Georgia State and Louisiana Lafayette are a game behind at 5-3.
“That was a tough win,” UTA coach Scott Cross said. “They started cutting into the lead and our guys got a little bit tight, but they made plays down the stretch.”
The Mavericks took a 34-24 lead at halftime and seemed in command as they led 56-49 with 4:03 remaining in the game.
Monroe began to cut into the lead and trimmed the deficit to 56-52 with 1:42 remaining.
But UTA’s Kevin Hervey sank a 3-pointer, giving the Mavericks a 59-52 lead with 1:16 left.
The Warhawks made another charge, scoring the next five points, cutting the deficit to 59-57 with 24 seconds left.
But UTA guard Johnny Hill was fouled and made both free throws, giving the Mavericks a 61-57 lead.
