The UT Arlington baseball team used a six-run second inning and recorded 14 hits overall to beat Stephen F. Austin 13-5 Tuesday in Nacogdoches.
RJ Williams led the offense with three hits, three steals and two RBIs while scoring four runs. In all five Mavericks recorded multiple hits as UTA (5-4) jumped out early on the Lumberjacks (5-4).
In the second inning, UTA loaded the bases with no outs off Stephen F. Austin starter Austin Hagy. After Cody Farrell’s groundout scored one, Darien McLemore connected on a two-run double, Matt McLean added a RBI single and Christian Hollie drove in two with a single to put UTA ahead.
That was all the scoring the Mavericks pitchers would need, but UTA quickly added three more in the top of the fourth to make the score 9-1. Colton Turner added his second home run of the season to make the score 11-2 in the sixth inning.
UTA used six pitchers in the game with Kadon Smith (2-1) getting the win in relief, giving up three runs, none earned, on two hits while striking out four in 1 2/3 innings.
The back half of the Mavericks’ bullpen has been strong this season and that continued Tuesday, when Dan Hawk Jr., Jacob Moreland and Daniel James combined to give up no runs on three hits. Moreland shined by shutting out the Lumberjacks and striking out four in 2 1/3 innings.
