UTA women hold off Stephen F. Austin down stretch

Rebekah VanDijk scored 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Mavericks to a 67-63 victory Tuesday over former Southland rival Stephen F. Austin.

The Mavericks (3-3) also had Kamy Cole with 12 points, while Cierra Jonson and Amara Wainwright each contributed nine.

Taylor Ross led the defending Southland champion Lady Jacks (4-2) with 19 points, and Brentney Branch chipped in with 16.

UTA shot 51 percent from the field, hitting on 25 of 49 shots, including 8 of 11 by VanDijk. Wainwright was 3-of-6 from 3-point range.

The Mavericks jumped out to an 18-13 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Jacks cut the lead to 2 by halftime, 33-31.

The win marked just the sixth win for UTA in Nacogdoches. The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series 58-16, including a 23-6 record at home.

UTA travels to Kansas State on Thursday night before returning back to College Park Center on Dec. 13 against Western Kentucky.
