The USA Today coaches’ poll had Florida State, Auburn, Baylor, Ole Miss and Notre Dame in the top five. Mississippi State was sixth.TCU was 12th.
• Men’s tennis: The doubles team of Nick Chappell and Will Stein won the consolation doubles bracket at an ITA All-American tournament in Tulsa. They defeated Ross Guignon and Tim Kopinski of Illinois 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 6-9 in Flushing, N.Y.
• Women’s golf: All five Horned Frogs shot 72 or better as TCU moved into a tie for 13th place after the second round of the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla. With a 4-over-par 284, TCU lowered its team score by 12 strokes and is at 580. Mississippi State leads with a 550. Kortnie Maxoutopoulis and Emmy Martin led TCU with 70s.
UT Arlington fell to host Arkansas State 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 28-30, 25-20) in Sun Belt volleyball. The loss drops the Mavericks to 13-5 overall, 3-3 in conference. Freshman Qiana Canete led UTA with 24 digs and 13 kills.
