UTA bats quiet in loss to Abilene Christian

Seth Spivey hit a two-run home run in the first inning and three Abilene Christian pitchers combined on a five-hitter, helping the Wildcats edge UT Arlington 2-1 at the UTA Hilton Invitational on Sunday.

Garrett Demeyere held the Mavericks (4-10) to four hits over eight innings for Abilene Christian (7-6).

UTA starter Brad Vachon saw his record drop to 1-4 despite going the distance, allowing only two runs, eight hits and striking out six.

“They got two runs in the first and that is all it took,” Mavericks coach Darin Thomas said. “We had 20 outs that were either fly balls or strikeouts. That isn’t going to work, especially in this ballpark. I think the effort is there but we just aren’t very good right now and need to figure out how to get better.”
